Since you can’t actually power your Spectacles off, this article explains how Spectacles work in the context of battery life and what you can do to get the best battery life out of your Spectacles.
What to Know
- There isn’t a power button on Snapchat Spectacles, so you can’t power them off in any kind of traditional sense.Luckily, Snapchat spectacles can take hundreds of pictures or over seventy videos or last for about a whole day on a single charge. However, battery life is heavily dependent on how you use your Spectacles, so what you do with them will impact how long they last.
Why You Can’t Power Off Snapchat Spectacles
Like many devices today which work wirelessly in conjunction with other devices, like a Bluetooth speaker and a phone, Snapchat Spectacles are always on so you can connect to and use them whenever you want without delay.
It’s important to recognize that battery life is going to be heavily dependent on how you use your Spectacles, and Snapchat is purposefully unclear about how long you can expect Spectacles to last for this very reason. So, keep in mind your experience with battery life can and will vary.
For example, after you take a picture or record a video on your Spectacles on iOS, you’ll get a notification on your phone telling you there’s a Snap ready to be imported. From taking a Snap on your Spectacles to sending it off to someone, there are only a few taps involved.
As a result, much of the core functionality of the Snapchat Spectacles rely on these instantaneous, always-on features so much so the glasses themselves wouldn’t really work if you had to regularly turn them on and off before using them.
How to Save Battery Life on Snapchat Spectacles
Even if you can’t actually turn your Spectacles off, there are ways to get the most out of your Spectacles’ battery.
How big is the battery exactly? Well, Snapchat hasn’t been incredibly forthcoming about their devices’ battery lives, because it’s so relative. Spectacles are generally good for hundreds of pictures, over seventy videos, or about a day’s worth of battery life on a single charge.
If you’d like to make sure you are at the longer-end of the battery life spectrum, here’s what you can do:
- Wait to import your Snaps until you’re back home. If you don’t constantly connect your phone to Spectacles, be it over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, your Spectacles will last longer.Resist the urge to take Snaps constantly. With Spectacles, there’s a temptation to record everything, since it’s so easy. Treat Spectacles like any other camera, and the battery should last longer.Don’t take too many videos. Video on Snapchat Spectacles is in HD and at 60 frames-per-second (for the 2nd and 3rd generations of Spectacles), which means recording videos takes a fair amount of power to do. Mix it up between pictures and videos, and your Spectacles will last longer.
On Android, Snaps are imported automatically to your Memories in the Snapchat app. On iOS, you’ll see the option to Import Snaps from Spectacles from your Memories in the Snapchat app. From your Memories, you can save Snaps to your phone’s camera roll.
Spectacles can hold up to 150 video Snaps or 3,000 still Snaps. The capacity varies depending on the length of your videos. Snaps automatically get deleted from Spectacles’ storage after being imported to your phone.
