Lately many details have been leaking out about Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, but now things are starting to get real. In a new report from The Verge confirms that Microsoft is emailing invitations to many people from the tech media to attend a special event on September 23, 2013, in New York City to launch the second generation of Surface.
One thing to be clear about this event is that Microsoft will not be releasing the new tablets that day — this is more like an introduction event –. The rumor still is that the new hardware will ship alongside Windows 8.1 General Availability on October 18th. Also the rumored Surface-mini (8-inch tablet) will not be introduced during the event.
OK, this is basically all the information out there, because Microsoft is being secretive, but here are some of the information already confirmed:
- Surface Pro 2: The upgrade will include Intel’s latest Core i5 Haswell processor, the option of 4GB or 8GB of RAM, improved battery life, and a lot more.
- Surface 2: This upgrade comes with a new name, as you can notice that “RT” is gone, Microsoft will preload the tablet with Windows RT 8.1 (Oh! The company is not modifying the OS name), it will run a Tegra 4 CPU, and it’ll feature a 1920×1080 screen resolution. For more info read my previous article.
Microsoft is also planning on releasing a few new accessories, so far we know about the Surface Docking Station and Surface Power Cover. However, neither of these accessories will be compatible with the Surface RT 2.
