The rumors of Microsoft allowing phone makers to install Windows Phone operating system in new handsets for free has been piling up for some time. But now it seems that the software maker has made its first deal with two Indian phone manufacturers (Lava Xolo and Karbonn) to offer free licensing to distribute Windows Phone operating system in new handsets.
Although Microsoft hasn’t released any specifics of the deal, it’s clear that Microsoft waiving licensing feeds is to keep pushing Windows Phone into the market, but focus on lower price point handsets and to compete with Google Android operating system.
Karbonn, for example, will reportedly offer a dual-boot phone with the choice of running Windows Phone and Android.
Microsoft seems to be getting hit hard by Google, as the company is not only considering eliminating licensing feeds for Windows Phone, but the company is also cutting prices for the desktop version of Windows 8.1 to allow PC makers to install the operating system on low-cost devices such as tablets and laptops.
Even though we’re seeing Microsoft eliminating licensing feeds for certain phone makers, it’s unclear if we are ever going to see such deal here in the U.S.
