We’re starting to hear many rumors about the next version of Windows, which Microsoft codenamed “Threshold”, and even though there are many details already, the exact release date still a mystery. Previously information suggested that spring 2015 would be the release date (time frame), but now it seems the next major Windows update could arrive sometime in 2014.

Although, it’s too early to tell, according to Paul Thurrott, Windows “Threshold” could be making a landing in 2014, despite the information from Mary Jo Foley, who previously mentioned the update could release in spring 2015.

At this point it is hard to say who is right and who is wrong, both sources are very reliable, so at this moment is hard to predict when the next version of Windows — which could also be called Windows 8.2 — will be released. Thus far we know that Microsoft is planning to include the return of the Start menu and new modification on modern apps to allow them to run on the desktop environment.

So, can we actually expect Windows 8.2 in 2014? It’s highly possible as Microsoft has previously announced that the company has moved to a yearly rapid release cycle starting with Windows Blue, and it will be only logical to expect another major update by October or November 2014, but not before the arrival of Windows 8.1 “Update 1”, which is a smaller update for the operating system.

At this point everything is speculation so take this information with a grain of salt.
