If you are in the market for a new webcam, then wait because Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to release a new camera sometime in spring. Although the company is known for building peripherals (such as keyboards, mice, and cameras), it has not updated its line of webcams in over a decade, but it appears that this is about to change.
According to a new report from Petri, during the Surface event that is expected to happen this spring, Microsoft plans to unveil a new camera for computers alongside the Surface Laptop 4.
The new webcam is said that will feature a privacy cover and support for high-dynamic-range (HDR). However, the company won’t be trying too hard in the resolution department since it won’t support 4K.
The resolution that the peripheral will support is unclear but seeing that the most popular webcams are 1080p, this will likely be the resolution that Microsoft will be targeting. Also, the report does not indicate whether the webcam will include support for Windows Hello authentication. However, since no many cameras ship with this feature, it could be something that will make this peripheral stand up from the rest.
While it would be good to have a new webcam from Microsoft, there are still many unanswered questions regarding branding, pricing, release date, sensor and picture quality, design, and whether it will include a USB-C or USB-A plug.
If the rumor turns to be accurate, soon will know.
Alongside the new webcam, the company plans to reveal the new Surface Laptop 4, an incremental refresh featuring the latest Intel chips, but only newer AMD processors, since the details point out that Microsoft plans to use the 4000 series instead of the 5000 series chips.
The reports claim that Microsoft may also announce other peripherals during the spring Surface event, such as an audio item and possibly a dongle.
